Blue and Gold Macaw hanging around

Blue and Gold Macaw hanging around Jimmy, our Blue and Gold Macaw, loves to hang by a toenail. It seems that a lot of parrots do this. They are probably entertaining themselves or trying to get our attention, who knows? Either way, it's very cute!

Hyacinth Macaw pair

Hyacinth Macaw pair All Macaws typically mate for life. They also share food with their mates and groom each other. During the breeding season, mothers incubate eggs, while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest. This lovely pair of Hyacinth Macaws reminds us that life is better when sharing it with someone you love.

Beautiful Military Macaw in flight

Beautiful Military Macaw in flight The Military Macaw is a predominantly green bird, but there are also many beautiful colors in its plumage. The green itself ranges from olive to the most mesmerizing emerald. Covering his lower back, and flowing down to the beginnings of its tail feathers, the Military Macaw flashes brilliant, almost luminescent turquoise. Also, the tail feathers themselves are a mixture of burgundy, sky blue and streaks of green. On the underside, you will be surprised by the most vivid yellow. Here is a lovely picture of a Military Macaw in flight.

Hahn's Macaw step up

the macaw
Hahn's Macaw step up Discipline is important for your pet Hahn's Macaw. Always ask it to step up on your finger to come out of its cage. Tell your parrot to step up in a calm and soothing voice. Also, use a piece of food to tempt it into place. The food can act as a reward and your parrot will soon get the idea.

Green Wing Macaw playing with his toy

,596 votes
pet macaw aviaries
Green Wing Macaw playing with his toy Macaws love to play and should have plenty of toys in good condition for stimulation. They tend to chew whatever they can get their beaks on. It is very important that they have something to chew on to prevent beak overgrowth, since that could make it impossible for them to eat anymore. Johnny here, a Green Wing Macaw, is happily playing with his new toy.

Holding a Hyacinth Macaw

Holding a Hyacinth Macaw It is important to know how to hold your bird properly and it will help you both to earn trust. When you want the bird to sit on your hand, it should end up with one foot on the inside of your hand (between your fingers and thumb) and with the other foot just above the wrist. Here, a friend of mine is demonstrating the best way to hold her Hyacinth Macaw. Notice how comfortable they both are.

pet macaw behaviour
Blue and Gold Macaw on its back It is very useful to teach a parrot how to lie on its back, in order to trim its toenails or feathers. This little Blue and Gold Macaw is demonstrating how it is done. The training must be done gradually and you should reward your parrot at the end.

Flock of Military Macaws sharing a cage

macaw bird life span
Flock of Military Macaws sharing a cage The Military Macaw needs a cage of minimum 36x48x60. They also need a lot of room to stretch their wings, so a flight cage is also recommended. Make sure you provide a variety of perch sizes for your bird to exercise its feet. Macaws also like to gnaw and chew so they should have plenty of toys handy.

Hahn's Macaw and Blue and Gold Macaw best friends

Hahn's Macaw and Blue and Gold Macaw best friends Hahn's Macaws are small, but they don't realize that and will fearlessly approach other birds or animals that are much larger than them. With larger birds or other animals, they need to be closely watched, in order to keep them safe. These are Freddy, a Hahn's Macaw, and Ringo, a Blue and Gold Macaw. They grew up together and are best friends.

Hyacinth Macaw eating

Anodorhynchus
Hyacinth Macaw eating In the wild, the Hyacinth Macaw eats a variety of fruits and other vegetation, mainly palm nuts. Because it is very difficult to feed your pet Hyacinth Macaw what it would be eating in the wild, experienced aviculturists recommend feeding a variety of fruits and vegetables and also a mixture of nuts in shell.

Green Wing Macaw cycling The Green Wing Macaw, also known as the Gentle Giant, is the second in size, after the Hyacinth Macaw. It is a very intelligent bird and can be trained to perform a variety of tricks and speak about 15-20 words. They require a big cage and lots of exercise. This Green Wing Macaw is enjoying some healthy exercise: he's cycling!

Scarlet Macaw preening This Scarlet Macaw spent a long time preening meticulously. And one can see why he wanted to look his best. Scarlet Macaws have beautifully colored feathers, which makes them very popular as pets. They are mostly red, with yellow and blue in their wings and tail.

Actually it is a Scarlet Macaw, if you look closely at the bend of the right wing, you can actually see the yellow that sets a Scarlet macaw from a Green Wing, also Green Wings are not as vibrant a red as Scarlets

Military Macaw trick

,655 votes
pet macaw diet
Military Macaw trick The Military Macaw is a very social bird, playful and inquisitive. It is considered to be a good choice for a show bird, because one of its favorite past times is swinging audaciously from one toenail. The Military Macaws in the picture learned a unique trick: if you throw food pellets at them, they will hang upside down and catch them in their wings. Even eating is fun for them!

Hyacinth Macaws in their natural habitat The Hyacinth Macaw, also known as Hyacinthine Macaw, is the largest macaw and also the largest flying parrot species in the world. Because of the loss of habitat and overcollection for trade, the Hyacinth has become endangered. It can now only be found in a small region in South America.
